Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve – Gateway to the Amazon
Located in the northeastern Amazon of Ecuador, Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is one of the country’s most remarkable natural treasures. Spanning more than 603,000 hectares, the reserve protects an extraordinary mosaic of ecosystems, including primary rainforest, flooded and semi‑flooded forests, rivers, lagoons, and extensive wetlands. This unique landscape makes Cuyabeno one of the richest biodiversity hotspots on Earth.
The reserve’s interconnected waterways—formed by the Cuyabeno River, its tributaries, and a network of 14 serene lakes—create an ideal environment for exploration by canoe. Visitors have the chance to spot an incredible variety of wildlife, from pink river dolphins and caimans to monkeys, exotic birds, and countless rainforest species.
Cuyabeno is also home to the Siona Indigenous community, whose deep cultural heritage and traditional knowledge are an essential part of the region. Guided visits offer a respectful opportunity to learn about their way of life, medicinal practices, and sustainable relationship with the forest.
Whether exploring jungle trails, gliding across mirror‑like lagoons, or observing wildlife in its natural habitat, Cuyabeno offers an immersive Amazon experience year‑round. It is a destination for travelers seeking authenticity, tranquility, and a connection with one of the world’s last great rainforests.
